UNM Race and Ethnicity Code Change Project

Overview

The University of New Mexico collects information on the race and ethnicity of its students, faculty, and staff. This information is used to provide reports to state and federal agencies, which require demographic data. In 2010, the University will report race and ethnicity data under recently established federal guidelines. The new guidelines require the University to request this data in a new, two-part, format from its faculty, staff and students. The guidelines also allow individuals to select more than one race if they choose to do so.

Objective of Project

The objective of the Federally-Mandated Race and Ethnicity project is to bring the University of New Mexico into compliance with the new Federally-mandated changes to race and ethnicity codes by coordinating the update of all race and ethnicity collection instruments, data storage systems and reports.

Background

In October 2007, the U.S. Department of Education issued final guidelines for how institutions will implement the Office of Management and Budget's 1997 Standards for Maintaining, Collecting, and Presenting Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity. These changes are necessary for the Department of Education to implement the Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) 1997 Standards for how institutions Maintain, Collect and Present Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity.

Data collection using the new codes will begin in Fall 2009. The first IPEDS reports using the new race and ethnicity codes will be the Fall 2010 Enrollment and Human Resources reports, using data collected beginning in Fall 2009.
